West Virginia becomes 29th state to enact medical marijuana law
Gov. Jim Justice signed the “West Virginia Medical Cannabis Act” which legalizes the use of marijuana for certain medicinal purposes.
The law contains a broad anti-discrimination clause that applies in the employment context. However, employers are not required to accommodate the use of marijuana at work and may discipline employees who are “under the influence” of marijuana at work.
While most provisions of the law took effect immediately upon passage, no identification cards will be issued to patients until July 1, 2019.
