New Jersey Expands Background Check Requirements for Certain Healthcare Professionals
Effective immediately as of September 12, 2024, New Jersey Senate Bill 2311 (S-2311) expands criminal background check requirements for additional healthcare professionals.
The bill mandates that individuals licensed by the following New Jersey boards must now undergo standardized background checks, including FBI fingerprinting and state bureau of identification criminal history checks:
- State Board of Applied Behavior Analyst Examiners
- State Board of Creative Arts and Activities Therapies
- State Board of Dietetics and Nutrition
Previously, criminal background checks for these professions were inconsistent across the state. Under S-2311, licenses may be denied, revoked, or not renewed if disqualifying information is found, such as criminal offenses or license revocations from other states. This legislation addresses what State Senator Robert Singer, the bill's sponsor, referred to as "a mistake," as these professionals often work with vulnerable populations.
